THE FARMHOUSE
Wide, open green areas, absolute peace and quiet and traditional family style hospitality are the elements that typify a holiday at the Santa Caterina agriturismo.
Situated in a beautiful, panoramic location amidst wooded land and olive groves, this organic farm provides accommodation in two late 19th century stone farmhouses called: Podere Sant’Emilia e Podere Santa Caterina.
Both provide a romantic ambience and every apartment is different even if all are furnished in typical rustic style wood furniture.
Each flat has its own external area complete with table, chairs and bar-b-q so that guests can enjoy a cook-out.
The swimming pool, supplied with sun beds and umbrellas, also benefits from splendid views, and there is a children’s play area near by as well as a ping-pong table and volley ball court.
Here, the environmentally aware owners ensure
that all rubbish is recycled, and use wood, a renewable fuel source to provide heating along with solar panels that also supply hot water.
Between them, your hosts can also provide a warm welcome in English, French & German and are also happy to receive family pets.
Little wonder that it has been awarded 3 ears of corn! (the grading system for agriturismi).
SERVICES
Each apartment is allocated full use of a table, chairs and, when necessary an umbrella, as well as a bar-b-q for fun cook-outs.
The Santa Caterina apartments are all equipped with standard TV’s, whereas those in Santa Emilia also have satellite TV.
The 5m x 12m swimming pool is in a panoramic location and also has a large communal bar-b-q area.
Ping pong table; Volley Ball court; Children’s play area with slide and sandbox.
Washing machine and clothes line for guest use.
Dogs can be left in a shaded, fenced-in area if guests are out for only a short while.
All rubbish is recycled.
SURROUNDINGS
The Santa Caterina is just 3 km from the characteristic medieval village of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina.
This valley actually covers a vast area that is littered with small medieval villages, the most notable of which is Castelnuovo that has spread and grown to resemble a pine cone with a bell-tower perched on top.
Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, located at 500 m above sea level, has a population of around 2,500.
The agriturismo is not far from thriving chestnut groves that provide a plentiful supply of chestnuts and mushrooms during the autumn, and in fact the Chestnut Festival is celebrated in the middle of October every year.
Those who love to hike or mountain bike will be happy to know there are numerous trails that cut through the countryside.
One in particular, not far from Sasso Pisano, is 5 km long and provides a unique opportunity to admire endogenous geo-thermal phenomenon that make one feel as if one is in the middle of Dante’s Inferno, surrounded by steam geysers and hot water springs.
Archaeological relics found nearby prove that there was a spa here built in Etruscan times.
It is thought that the location was probably a transit point between Volterra and both Populonia and Etruria.
Other major towns nearby include Volterra and Massa Marittima, 39 & 30 km away respectively.
San Gimignano is also quite close by whilst Siena and other Art Cities such as Pisa, Lucca and Florence are not far away either.
Santa Caterina is also within easy reach of several seaside resorts including Follonica and San Vicenzo; the latter also has a beach that allows dogs.

This, the largest of the apartments is a duplex that provides some 120 sq.m. of space.
On the first floor there is a large lounge with a typically Tuscan open fireplace, a wood burning oven & TV.
The spacious kitchen is custom built in “brick”, and is equipped with a dishwasher and a larder.
Upstairs there are two double and one single bedroom plus a shower room.
Outside, there is a bar-b-q and table and chairs providing another option for moments of relaxation.

It is accessible directly from its own parking space.

Prices Include:
The cost of the apartment based on arrivals between 4 and 8 p.m. on Saturdays through until 9 a.m. of the following Saturday.
The cost of all electricity, water and gas consumed.
Bed, bathroom & kitchen linen that is changed weekly
Use of the swimming pool and all facilities.
Not included in the price, but to be paid on arrival:
- A €150 deposit per apartment
- -heating costs for the studio and 2 roomed flat at €30 per week, for the 3-roomed flat with one bathroom, €40 per week, 3 rooms with two bathrooms or the 4 roomed flat costs €60 per week
-cot or extra bed, €35 per person,
- dogs €25 per week |
